| Birthplace of Joseph Roswell Hawley, general in the Union Army,and a senator from Connecticut (1881-1905). Hawley was stationed in Wilmington as the general charged with securing supplies for Sherman’s troops. After Sherman took command of the Carolinas, and through the first year of reconstruction, Hawley was the general in charge of eastern North Carolina. |
