One of the state’s most interesting architectural sites. The Society was organized in 1853 to leaven the moral and cultural life of the area, and the unique building was constructed shortly after. The hexagonal structure is made from hand-molded bricks and has at the apex of its roof an upturned chalice standing on a Bible. This site lies along the route of Sherman’s army. The chalice and Bible were reportedly shot off by passing Union troops.
