Laurinburg Institute

One of North Carolina’s most significant African-American historical sites, the Institute was founded in 1904 and for many years was the only school in the area for African-American students. The school has built a national reputation for quality education, and counts among its graduates jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, Boston Celtics star Sam Jones, and the University of North Carolina’s first black athlete, Charlie Scott.
